Naval Battle for the Paracels: VPN vs PLAN

HILTON Hanoi

[I am sitting with  Rear Admiral Anh Dung Tru of the Vietnamese Peoples Navy in the  Hanoi Hilton  ]

“Paracel Islands, the first shot of the war Admiral?” I asked.

"It was our first shot, but the Beijing fired first at Taiwan. We made our position known to the PRC's ambassador what our price would be to stay out of the war back in April."

[Would Vietnam had stayed out of the war if Red China had given Vietnam the Paracel Islands, or as you now call them, the Hoàng Sa Islands? ]

" Of course, nobody wants war. Well must sane people anyway. We were pretty sure though that the man in Beijing won't even consider our offer. We also  knew that by joining the Taiwanese that we would be taking a beating, at least at first anyway. We also knew that the pay off would be well worth it if the rest of the countries involved came through, and if Taiwan could hold out long enough for them to come to both our aid. Our job was to take as much pressure off  Taiwan as possible, that's why we landed our best Paratroopers on the Hoàng Sa Islands within 24 hours of PRC and ROC hostilities."

“So you had no doubts that the USA, Japan, Australia and India would enter the war to support your cause?”

Oh yes, we had plenty of doubts. After the Russians failed to support us in 1979, and the USA gave up on the South in 1975, we didn't have much faith it relying on other countries.  This was IT however, if we didn't support Taiwan now, all the countries in Asia would be bowing and sending tribute to Beijing for here on out. It worth the risk.

“You and your ship barely survived the battle, BUT you saved not only your ship, but half the fleet”

"As I said taking on Beijing was a considerable risk. We had to do as much as we could without being completely destroyed. We had to do something though. After they wrecked our fleet I was sure that we were dead, but instead of finishing us off the PLAN Admiral had other targets he needed his missiles for. This was actually a big mistake on his part, one Beijing would pay dearly for."

“You mean the joint Indian and Vietnamese oil rigs to the south that they destroyed four hours later?"

"Xi wanted to punish us for our actions and invading his "sea". What he failed to realize just how bad Sino-Indian relations had fallen in the last year with both the COVID19 plague and the boarder clashes near Tibet. Xi thought Pakistan and Cashmere would keep  them too pre-occupied to miss a few oil wells, he was sadly mistaken...
